Bio:
Hugo Alberto López Chavolla is a Ph.D. candidate in the Interdisciplinary Humanities program at UC
Merced. He specializes in Latin American studies focusing on the cultural production of Arab
communities in Latin America. His research interests include affects and structures of feeling of
migration and dislocation, social structures of virtual worlds, and Mexico's cultural transformations
during the 21st century. In his research, he utilizes an interdisciplinary approach - borrowing from
cultural, sociological, literary, postcolonial, decolonial, and affect theories - to the studies of literature,
film, and visual arts. He holds a B.A. in Spanish, a B.S. in Business Management, and an M.A. in
Interdisciplinary Humanities. He is passionate about learning and teaching and enjoys writing fiction and
poetry in English and Spanish during his spare time. Some of his poems and short stories have been
published in the UC Merced Vernal Pools Journal, Z Publishing's Best Emerging Poets anthologies, and
America’s Best Emerging Writers series.
