Workshop to Focus on Diversity, African Studies

Everyone is invited to a special event featuring UCLA Professor Jemima Pierre, speaking on “Africa and the Project of Black Studies” as part of a workshop entitled “The Critical Politics of Diversity in the Multiversity: Towards Africana Studies in the UC System.”

Pierre, a professor of anthropology and African studies, will speak at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, in the Crescent Arch Room. The workshop continues at 5:30 p.m. with a panel discussion on “The Politics of Diversity at UC Merced,” featuring professors Nigel Hatton, Anneeth Kaur Hundle, Asmeret Asefaw Berhe and Whitney Pirtle; Rochelle Mulondo, president of AFRO Hall; Daniel Rios, an Interdisciplinary Humanities graduate student; and Manar Harran, president of the Black Student Union and a #DroptheCharges campaign activist.

A reception takes place at 7 p.m. in Elizabeth's Garden and the adjacent private dining room.

The workshop is sponsored by the University of California Humanities Research Institute; the UC Merced Center for the Humanities, the office of the dean of the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts; the vice provost for Faculty Affairs; the Humanities and World Cultures Group; the Interdisciplinary Humanities Program; the Critical Race and Ethnic Studies Program; and the Office of Campus Climate.
